#39: Beyoncé Knowles

First Jay-Z crushed our dreams by putting a ring on it, and then shortly after her fourth album dropped, Beyonce dropped another major announcement — that she was pregnant. But that didn’t stop the former Destiny’s Child singer from touring, and it didn’t stop her from making this list. The hip-hop megastar may have officially retired her Sasha Fierce alter ego to take on the role of mom to Blue Ivy, but we’re sure she’ll remain as mesmerizing as ever.

Cowell eyes up Beyonce Knowles for X Factor after US cull

Beyoncé Knowles is been courted to join the US X Factor judging panel, according to reports.

The TV talent show’s judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, along with host Steve Jones, were recently axed in a massive shake up of the programme.

Simon is now keen to get some big names on board including Beyoncé and Mariah Carey.

The Chicago Sun-Times claims that Simon is eyeing up the superstars after seeing the weight that musicians Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have added to rival show American Idol.

“Simon wants nothing but the best for the X Factor,” a show insider added to British newspaper The Mirror.

Simon is returning to the judging panel for the second series of the singing show with music producer L.A. Reid.

The British mogul yesterday thanked Paula, Nicole and Steve for their work on the first series. Paula also released her own statement saying that she totally understood the “business decision”.

“Simon and I, along with Fox and Fremantle, have been communicating about this for a while now, and I have absolute understanding of the situation. Simon is, and will remain a dear friend of mine,” she said.

However, the Chicago Sun-Times suggests the parting was “anything but amicable”.

“There were a lot of angry words. I know Simon and Paula say they’re still friends, and Simon’s claiming he and Paula will again work together, but there will have to be some time for that [rift] to heal after what went down the past few days,” a show insider told the publication.

Billboard Reveals the 2012 Power 100

Billboard found something else that Irving Azoff, executive chairman of Live Nation, can sit atop: In the January 28 issue of the magazine, Billboard unveils the Power 100, a ranking of the most powerful people in the music business.

Rankings were determined by a combination of key factors including market share, exclusive Billboard chart data/boxscore information, and revenue. A team of 15 top Billboard editors then analyzed the value of these metrics to produce the final results. The list is U.S. based. As well, the Power 100 puts a premium on the top decision makers at each company. So, for example, the strong position of Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine’s is an argument against a high position for the number-two at that company, Steve Berman, who still makes the list.

The list boasts six artists, each of whom cracked the business ranking for specific reasons. “We couldn’t weigh the power of an artist’s fanbase against the power an executive has, or this would have simply been an artist list,” says Bill Werde, Billboard’s editorial director. “Our Moneymakers list is our artist list. But certain artists were able to break through to the Power 100 based purely on their business success or innovations.”

Artists on the Power 100 include Jay-Z and Beyonce as a power couple, Taylor Swift, U2, Jon Bon Jovi and Lady Gaga.

BILLBOARD’S 2012 POWER 100 INDEX:

1. Irving Azoff
2. Coran Capshaw
3. Lucian Grainge
4. Martin Bandier
5. Doug Morris
6. Michael Rapino
7. Rob Light
8. Len Blavatnik
9. Tim Leiweke
10. Jimmy Iovine

Mary J Blige Salutes Beyonce, Miguel, Chris Brown

Mary J. Blige has shown love to those who have followed in her footsteps.

Appearing on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live! Tuesday night, Blige saluted a number of R&B/soul artists including Beyonce and Miguel.

“I have to say I respect all the females,” Blige said in response to a fan questioning who her favorite artist is right now. “The Alicia Keys’, Beyonce, who can sing and entertain.”

After praising Keys and Beyonce, the latter appearing on her latest album “My Life II: The Journey Continues, Act I,” Blige recognized “Sure Thing” singer Miguel and Chris Brown.

“…Chris Brown. Miguel. I appreciate mostly all of the young artists,” said Blige.

In related news, Mary J Blige addressed controversy at the Golden Globes over the Best Original Song award and beef between Elton John and Madonna Tuesday. Claiming she “doesn’t know” Madonna, Blige called Elton John a close friend.

“I love Elton. Elton is my friend for real,” said Blige. “I don’t know Madonna. So I would never say anything negative about her.”

Jessica Alba: Beyonce and Jay-Z should sell first photos of Blue Ivy Carter in order to avoid public ‘hysteria’

Posted on: 2012-01-21 | By : Andi | In : News | Comments: 0

Jessica Alba has some parenting advice for Jay-Z and Beyonce Knowles.

Appearing on CNN, the actress told “Showbiz Tonight” host A.J. Hammer that the celebrity power couple should sell the first photos of daughter Blue Ivy Carter and invest the money in a trust fund.

“For our family, we just wanted to control the experience,” Alba said of her own deal with daughter Honor, now 3. The actress, 30, and husband Cash Warren reportedly banked $1.5 million from OK! magazine for the exclusive 2008 photo shoot.

“We put the money that the picture made into a bank account for Honor to do whatever she wants to do with,” she continued. “It’s her picture, it’s her birth, and we didn’t want it to be like a weird thing when we were walking out of the house for the first time.”

Alba further explained that her decision to sell the newborn photos was a strategic move to avoid paparazzi from getting too close.

“If there’s a price tag on your child – which is so bizarre – people will go to crazy lengths. We wanted to avoid that hysteria,” she said.

Alba, who welcomed second daughter, Haven, last August, said the experience was enjoyable.

“We were friends with the photographer. It was just a nice day in the house,” she shared. “We’ll have those beautiful pictures forever. You can give the money to charity and to your baby and that’s it. But the biggest thing is having a healthy baby … I’m sure Beyonce will make the best decision for her family.”

Beyoncé Pays Tribute to the Eternally Great Etta James!

“This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen. Her musical contributions will last a lifetime. Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist. When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed.”

Beyoncé as a Political Figure?

Posted on: 2012-01-20 | By : Andi | In : News | Comments: 0

Beyoncé is known as a performer, fashion designer, Jay-Z’s missus, and arguably the most famous new mom in the world. But should she also be considered a social change agent?

Kevin Allred, a doctoral student and lecturer in Rutgers’ Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, where he teaches “Politicizing Beyoncé,” thinks so – though, he says, the artist may not be “political” in the traditional sense of the word.

“This isn’t a course about Beyoncé’s political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama’s inauguration weekend,” he says. Rather, the performer’s music and career are used as lenses to explore American race, gender, and sexual politics. Allred pairs Beyoncé’s music videos and lyrics with readings from the Black feminist canon, including the writings of bell hooks, Alice Walker, and even abolitionist Sojourner Truth.

“Politicizing Beyoncé” emerged from Allred’s four semesters teaching Women’s Studies 101 at Rutgers, during which he and his students, both male and female, often discussed the thin line Beyoncé walks as a sex kitten-cum-girl power role model.

“She certainly pushes boundaries,” Allred says. “While other artists are simply releasing music, she’s creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona.”

Course topics include the extent of Beyoncé’s control over her own aesthetic, whether her often half-naked body is empowered or stereotypical, and her more racy performances as her alter ego, “Sasha Fierce.” In-class discussions often lead to other vocalists, including Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Lady Gaga, and contemporary musicians who embrace the soul singing tradition like Adele and the late Amy Winehouse.

More academics are beginning to explore race, gender, and sexual politics through popular culture and bring such discourse into their classrooms. Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson offers a similar course, “The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Theodicy of Jay-Z,” on Beyoncé’s rapper husband.

Allred welcomes conversation about the course, particularly from those who question the relevance of intellectual study of pop stars. “It’s important to shift students away from simply being consumers of media toward thinking more critically about what they’re engaging on a regular basis,” he says. “When students don’t respond to theory or dense readings, it’s often easier to see things play out in the world around them.”

A folk singer/songwriter and owner of an independent record label, Gutter Folk Records, Allred was initially drawn to Beyoncé’s work after listening to her second solo album, B’Day. He notes a raw quality in the technical production of the album, over which Beyoncé is said to have had total creative control.

“It wasn’t as polished as her first and subsequent albums,” Allred says of B’Day. “You can even hear her breathing on the tracks, which is normally edited out. I wondered, ‘Why would you record a vocal to stand out in that way?’”

Allred’s desire to merge his passion for music traditions with his interest in the politics of race, gender, and sexuality in the United States emerged during his undergraduate and graduate studies. He holds two degrees in American Studies – a bachelor’s from Utah State University and a master’s from the University of Massachusetts Boston.

As a doctoral candidate at Rutgers, he is currently writing his dissertation on the ways black female performers manipulate their vocal qualities, including tone, timbre, and pitch.

Growing up a white gay male in a relatively homogenous community in Utah, Allred spent a lot of time in the library. There, he discovered black feminist texts, including the works of Audre Lorde, Octavia Butler, and Toni Morrison.

“Their work resonated with me in ways that other content hadn’t,” Allred says of the black feminist scholars. “I found myself identifying with their writing because racism, sexism, homophobia, and privilege are larger systems under which we all operate.”

Allred only assigns his students writings by black women for “Politicizing Beyoncé” as black feminism is an academic discipline replete with identity politics.

“Of course, there are people who’ll say, ‘You’re not black. You’re not a woman,’” he says of his research and teaching interest. “It’s something I’m always questioning and staying aware of so as not to overstep any bounds or make any claims for a group that I don’t belong to. It’s a fine line and I want to remain respectful of that.”
